A 'LITTLE' ABOUT US
A 'LITTLE' ABOUT US
The Little String Orchestra (LSO) was founded by Virginia Little in 1977. Virginia strongly believed in providing musical education and opportunity to young string players and quickly became a fixture in the local music community. Eventually, she founded the Brant Suzuki String School in 1988.
Mrs. Little is an advocate and teacher of the Suzuki method. The Suzuki philosophy is that musical skills can be nurtured at home by parents in the same way many other skills are developed. Mrs. Little stated that Suzuki revolutionized string pedagogy all over the world and that you could do a student exchange anywhere and they’d all know the same repertoire.
Mrs.Little always emphasized that the orchestra was open to anyone with interest. There was no pressure to perform at a certain level and you did not have to audition. Everyone was welcome to join together in music.
Her students say that Mrs. Little was always nurturing, patient, committed and encouraging at every age and every level. This is no surprise, since Mrs. Little believes that music is one of the skills children can carry on later in life and she feels privileged to have worked with so many families through out her teaching and conducting career.
Virginia retired in 2018, but her legacy carries on as LSO continues to teach, nurture and encourage music within our community, welcoming string players of all ages and levels.
The Little String Orchestra is a growing community, uniting generations in a delightful musical and social experience. We are a string orchestra that fosters friendships, enhances personal growth, and where members from five to seventy–five share a common goal of achievement through learning a diverse musical repertoire.
The Little String Orchestra is an amateur string group which unites generations of musicians and welcomes string players of any age or level. We consist of two orchestras, the Junior orchestra for beginners and the Senior orchestra for intermediate and senior players. The orchestra rehearses weekly from September to May. We have several performances throughout the year, starting with an Evening of Christmas Music every December. We hold the annual Celebrate Our Youth Concert which features the musical talents of local youth. Every April, the orchestra visits three local schools to perform and share the love of music. The orchestra also participates in the annual Brant Music Festival. Our final concert of the year is our Spring Concert which is a celebration of everyone's hard work throughout the year. We also present awards and scholarships to several members.
